On July 24th, DUKE ENERGY, a company dedicated to the generation of electric power, collaborated with the Escuintla community to revitalize Gustavo Adolfo Santizo School, located in Escuintla approximately 60km from Guatemala City. On that day, employees from DUKE ENERGY's four facilities met with management in order to improve the school's infrastructure. They painted the school's 14 classrooms, its sports field, as well as murals containing educational messages. In addition, they built floor games, supplied and decorated trash cans to promote recycling within the community, and gardened in the school's green area. With the help of parents and teachers, the company's employees also installed 10 new toilets to replace the old rundown ones.
Escuintla's residents and the school's teachers are extremely involved in their community, which is one of the reasons why DUKE ENERGY chose this school. For example, Daniel, one of the school's teachers, is very creative; he teaches his students to use garbage to create art. Daniel also worked closely with the other mural painters to draw what the volunteers accomplished the day of the event.
Some of Gustavo Adolfo Santizo School's 270 students were also able to connect with DUKE ENERGY volunteers through environmental learning activities aimed at teaching children more about Guatemala's Flora and Fauna.
